They may have finished in second place in the Rally of Crete, but Lefteris Alygizakis-Michalis Hatzidakis in the race of their particular homeland were looking for something better. The crew of the i-race participated in the third round of the Greek Tarmac Championship, pushed the second day with the Skoda Fabia R5 of the team, even winning a special stage. With Sunday’s leg being twice as long as Saturday’s and the Alygizakis-Hatzidakis distance from the top at 9 seconds, the crew came in determined to cut the difference in the 6 specials of the day: “Having been happy with the car setup, our goal in the second leg of the Crete Rally was to push stage to stage, in order to improve our performance and reduce the distance that separated us from the top”, said the driver and continued: “Indeed, in the first pass on the special Kerassia we made the fastest time, winning our first special stage in this year’s tarmac championship. We felt comfortable with the Skoda Fabia R5, we pushed and we succeeded! “
The sequel for the i-race duo was not proportional, as a spin in the next, second special stage of the day, forced him to lose valuable time and with it all hope for victory: “Unfortunately in Agia Barbara the car he slipped and we carried a spin with a lot of kilometers, a fact that automatically put us out of battle to claim victory. Of course, we were lucky in our misfortune, as we could have damaged the car and left the game early “, were the words of Lefteris Alygizakis who remained in second place.
A few kilometers before the end of the Rally of Crete, Alygizakis-Hatzidakis had a mechanical problem that almost deprived them of the second step of the podium in their home race: “In the first kilometers of the ninth special stage, Agia Varvara we had a problem with the fuel pump. Without a second thought we stopped the pace in order to finish, something we finally did. We did not lose the second place and that is the important thing. Let’s not forget that our main opponents are 8 times winners of the race in the past”, said the driver from Rethymno and concluded by saying: “We focus on the positives which are the clearly improved car setup, the second place in the race and the first victory this year special stagee. We continue!”
